Building savings vs. fixed-term deposit: Which is more worthwhile?

SavingsMarch 18, 2026min read

Building savings and fixed-term deposits are among the most popular forms of saving in Slovakia. Each of these products has its advantages and disadvantages that are important to understand before making a decision.

Building savings offer a state bonus, which in 2026 amounts to 5 % of annual deposits, up to a maximum of 70 euros. In addition, they offer the option of obtaining a preferential building loan after six years of saving.

A fixed-term deposit is a simpler product with a guaranteed interest rate. Banks currently offer rates from 2.5 % to 4 % per year depending on the lock-up period. The advantages are predictability and deposit protection up to 100,000 euros.

Who benefits from building savings? Primarily those who plan a renovation or property purchase and want to take advantage of the preferential loan. A fixed-term deposit is the better choice for those who simply want to safely park their spare cash.
