What are ETF funds?
An ETF (Exchange Traded Fund) is a fund traded on a stock exchange that tracks the performance of a specific index, sector or asset class. Unlike actively managed funds, ETFs have significantly lower fees.
ETFs are ideal for long-term investing because:
- Low costs – annual fees from 0.03 % (e.g. Vanguard S&P 500)
- Diversification – with a single purchase, you invest in hundreds of companies
- Transparency – you know exactly what the fund holds
- Liquidity – you can buy and sell at any time during trading hours
How to buy ETFs in Slovakia?
Online brokers
Through platforms like Interactive Brokers, XTB or Trading 212, you can buy ETFs directly. Some offer zero purchase fees.
Robo-advisors
Services like Finax or Portu automatically invest in an ETF portfolio based on your risk profile. Ideal for complete beginners.
ETF taxes in Slovakia
Gains from selling ETFs in Slovakia are tax-exempt if you hold the position for more than 1 year and annual income from sales does not exceed 500 €. Otherwise, they are taxed at 19 % (or 25 % above a certain threshold). Dividends are subject to withholding tax depending on the fund's domicile.
